In collaboration with Red Hook Labs in Brooklyn, 1-54 in London, and MAGNIN-A in Paris, OONI produced a virtual reality piece of Malick Sidibé’s works, shown at the exhibition on an HTC Vive.
The event celebrated the late Malian photographer’s iconic career beginning in 1950s Bamako, Mali. Sidibé is acclaimed for his black-and-white images chronicling the lives and culture of the capital city in the wake of its country’s independence.
The experience curates an alternate version of the exhibition, using the same original Malick Sidibé photographs in VR within different settings and scales, in indoor and outdoor spaces during night and day. The piece featured field recordings from the areas in Bamako where Malick originally shot his photos decades ago. The result is an experience living in the eye of Malick Sidibe.
