May 4-7, 2017
Brooklyn, New York
In collaboration with Red Hook Labs in Brooklyn, 1-54 in London, and MAGNIN-A in Paris, OONI produced a virtual reality piece of the acclaimed Malick Sidibé’s retrospective, The Eye Of Modern Mali.
It was shown on an HTC Vive at the New York exhibition, celebrating the late Malian photographer’s iconic career beginning in 1950s Bamako, Mali. Sidibé is acclaimed for his black-and-white images chronicling the lives and culture of the capital city in the wake of its country’s independence.
The experience curates an alternate version of the exhibition, using the same original Malick Sidibé photographs in VR within different settings and scales, in indoor and outdoor spaces during night and day.
Photographer Jehad Nga traveled to Bamako and captured field recordings of the locations where Malick originally shot his photos decades ago, which are included in this piece. The result is an experience of living in the eye of Malick Sidibé.
This immersive VR exhibition will be available via Steam for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in summer 2018. A mobile VR version for iOS will also be available on the App Store.
